Definition Essays on Art

Certain concepts cannot have one distinct definition. Being extremely multifaceted, the notion of art also belongs to this category. It is a common value of the society that, however, has a very personal character. Therefore, not everybody can perceive it in the same manner. Nevertheless, one definition that most people may relate to can be formulated. It should reflect the main aspects of art that help differentiate it from other forms that human desire for self-realization can take. Every individual reading the definition should be able to agree with at least part of it. To my mind, art is a complex of the means to express oneself and the result of this self-expression.

The concept of art is a combination of different subtypes each of which is equally effective in showing that human imagination has no limits. Ideas and emotions can be illustrated through a variety of tints and shades on a canvas or a beautiful, lively tune. They can be expressed in smooth bends of a sculpture, which is immovable and ready to go at the same time, or a passionate gesture of a dancer. The feature that unites these subtypes is the inability to let somebody remain indifferent. One may like a song or hate a painting but will not be able to have no feelings about it. To understand art, it is not necessary to be an expert in it or spend every spare minute in a museum. A person just needs to acknowledge someone else’s efforts and open own heart to the emotions being conveyed. Thus, art is a number of streams that fall into one river in order to move in a single direction.
