How to Get Your Book Reviews and Review Essays Published

Being a student, you are obliged to write book reviews and review essays. The more essays you write, the more experienced you get in creating them. At some point, you might be willing even to publish your papers with the aim to share the findings as well as let others use them in their research. However, a book review or a review essay should meet certain criteria before it can appear in a journal. Find out these requirements.

Trying to publish an essay or a review, you should realize that in such a way you become an active participant of the development of a specific academic field. It implies that your conclusions might be checked for validity and even face criticism. To withstand the process, your paper should have a strong thesis and adequate defense of your claims, interpretations, and critical points. Moreover, you will have to indicate implication, which the work under your analysis has.

TIf a review essay provides an evaluation and reaction to fiction, a film, or any other artwork, it is usually accepted for publishing. The paper may rely on other multiple sources apart from the work under analysis, but it still should be devoted to a specific aspect rather than the field in general. A book review, on the other hand, should be primarily based only on the work in question.

An appropriate review will discuss several aspects:
  • How does the author contribute to own field of study?
  • Is the contribution useful or valuable and why?
  • Is the author’s thesis properly reasoned and supported with sufficient evidence?
  • What are the consequences of the thesis being proved valid?

TWith regard to format specifications, the title of a book review should contain a correct citation of the book analyzed in a required style. Moreover, the text should be preceded by an abstract. The title of a review essay is up to the author, but it should definitely include a citation of the piece under consideration. The length of both should not exceed 5 pages (approximately 1500 words) including references, figures, tables, etc.
