Perfection Era

Perfection Era remains a period to be remembered in the American history as it was of enlightenment .It was the second Great awakening (Robert 1997). Many changes concerning culture and the society took place during this period which played a great role in the transformation of America to becoming a liberate nation that is today. There were important reforms that took place as a result of the abolitionist movement which was formed to fight for equal rights and justice.  Liberation was reached at due to many accomplishments made by women and abolitionists but it was not easy as there were many restraints that occurred along the way (Robert 1997).

Women played a major role during this period of awakening as they were very active in the church community. Other changes took place as women became more socially involved. The idea of being paired by pre-arranged marriages was abandoned and now men and women began choosing spouses based on affection (Davidson, Gienapp, et al, 2006).

Many accomplishments that were made during the time of women’s sphere posted effects more to the lower class as compared to the upper class. Marriage became an economic security for women and for this reason churches were filled up by young women who wanted spiritual guidance and an opportunity to find a possible suitor. In the 19th century the home environment also started experiencing some changes to. The role of men was mostly outside the home in offices, fields as well as factories. So as to contribute to the household income, women relied on spinning. However there was a need for spinners as a result of an increase in factories. Products such as clothes and soaps were made by women and many families were buying them.

Due to the separation of the home and work place the home took on a new identity. The home became a woman’s sphere as they stopped working in factories or their jobs were taken by men. This seemed to be liberation to women but it brought about many restraints to them. They were restrained to stay at homes. They attended to the families, ran the household as well as instilling morals and providing love and support. In churches, meetings and social gatherings men frowned at women. The role of women in the church changed and they began to convert. Women posted a higher number of converters than men and they had a couple of reasons for this. They wanted to widen their social circle of friends, to get a sense of purpose and to get an opportunity of marriage.

The issue of slavory

During this period of the second awakening the abolitionists also had many accomplishments (American Comparative Literature Association 1959). In this period people had a great concern on how others were treated. They put much concern on the rights of the women and the church as well as the issue of slavery. There was a great role to be played by the abolitionist women and men during the second awakening. Movements and protests occurred as a result of people knowing women to be independent and some people offering freedom to their slaves. They had a state of mind that every person has the right to freedom and they were preaching it to everyone. Most abolitionists shared their opinions by holding marches and protests. They were opposing the act of slavery because they thought it was against Christian practices. William Lloyd encouraged people to release slaves in a slavery journal that he published on January, 1, 1831 after speaking to free African Americans in Africa.

Though people released slaves in the south many of them demanded compensation for freeing them but Garrison in his writings convinced them that slavery was a sin and the only reward for freeing them is to gain virtue. In this era people funded and supported the anti slavery movement as they were effective. Networks such as the Underground Railroad were set up to convey slaves to freedom due to the good will of the people. Harriet Tubman was one of the famous conductors of this network and she played a major role in freeing 200 slaves (Maxwell 2009). Though the abolitionists ended slavery it also brought about deeper social problems. These include social segregation, wage disparity as well as educational discrimination. A number of slaves also ended up being in worse situations because they were viewed as property under slavery and were looked after but once they were freed it was no longer the slave’s or employer’s problem.

To conclude the perfection era was a great period that really favored slaves. Abolitionists ended slavery granting freedom to both female and male slaves (Maxwell 2009). People became aware that slavery was a bad practice viewed as a sin opposed to how they were handling the issue. The women sphere made them become more involved in social practices as well as segregating the role of women from that of men. Women previously made products such as soap and clothes for sale and they were granted the opportunity to choose who to marry as they were initially being brought husbands chosen for them by elders. Generally the second great awakening brought about many changes concerning the culture and society which played a major role in the process of transforming America to becoming a liberate nation as it is today.
