The Book of Job

In the book of Job it is evident that from the beginning Satan the accusing angel is up for a losing duel. God already knew the faithfulness of Job, but just to prove to Satan that Job was a righteous man God went ahead and allowed for tests to come upon Job. The best way for the God to prove Job’s faithfulness was to test every aspect of Job’s material life to determine where his allegiance lay; to his material belongings or towards God.

During a period when sons of God present themselves before Him, God acknowledges how there is a servant of His on earth that is faithful and there is no man like him. It is written in the book of Job 1: 8 that, “Has thou considered my servant there is none like him in the earth, a perfect man, an upright man, one that feareth God…” (Job 579) Satan refutes this claim by telling God that it is only because of the blessings that God has bestowed on Job that causes Job to be as Job describes him. In the book of Job 1:11 it is written that, “…put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face..” From this conversation between God and Satan, it is evident that God is so certain that Job is a faithful man and no amount of afflictions will cause him to change because his faithfulness is genuine. Satan on the other hand is not so sure but is just trying His luck by claiming that there must be something that has the caacity to demonstrate that Job’s faithfulness is superficial. Therefore, the bone of contention between God and Satan is the faithfulness of Job towards God. To prove this point God gives Satan various chances to test the faithfullness of Job but with no success. At first, Job’s loses the whole of his family including all his sons and daughters in one single day and it is written in Job 1: 22 that, “In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.” When Satan touches Job’s skin Job refuses to curse even when he is told to do so by his wife.

When his friends come to visit him some of the friends encourage him to be resilient and remain faithful to but some discourage him with each one fo them providing they own interpretation of the situation. Eliphaz the Te’ manite advises Job in Job 5: 17 that, “Behold is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the almighty.” However, it is true that Job used to worship and repent to God even on behalf of his sons and daughters. In Job 1: 5 it is written that Job used to offer burnt sacrifices lest any of his sons might have sinned. Therefore, the assumptions of Eliphaz are not actually accurate and may have actually acted to affect the faithfulness of Job but they did not. The three friends are just but specualting and even Job observes this and tells them in Job 19: 2 that, “How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?” When Job professes that although he is being afflicted he is righteous, Elihu attacks him by accusing that he claims that he is righteous and yet God is punishing him. It is written in Job 34: 6 that, “should Ilie against my right?”

Eventually, Jobs undergoes all the afflictions without cursing God which was what would have proven that his faithfulness was not genuine. Although he is accused by man for claiming that he is righteous, in the eyes of God and Satan Job is actually faithfull. Therefore, it is God who wins the wager.
