The Training of a Photojournalist

Photojournalism has never been chosen as a profession for those who seek fame and glory, but by those who have a passion for discovering and capturing events and sharing them with the world. Photojournalism tells us stories in pictures, but more importantly these pictures should abide by the rules of journalism. There have been various famous photojournalists in this era and in the past, whose achievements will never be forgotten in this field. One such famous personality was Eddie Adams (1933-2004). Beginning his photography career from high school, he joined the Associated Press (AP) in 1962, where he was the first and the only one holding the title of Special Correspondent.  His specialty was covering war scenes. Overall, he covered 13 wars, including wars in Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Ireland and Kuwait (Kobre, 2008)

W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) graduated from Notre Dame University specialized in photo editing. Smith’s specialty was photo stories. He also covered World War II in the Pacific. Smith’s essay “Country Doctor” is one of my favorites, and it is also considered as the first modern photo story.

My experience and background has enabled me to recognize a worth capturing moment giving it a meaningful caption. With education and proper training in the field of photojournalism, I will enhance my skill, especially in the areas of photo editing and choosing the right photographic moments.

To become a professional photojournalist, after completing formal education and training, my biggest investment would be my lens. More focus would be given on lighting and photo composition to understand the photographs. More and more practice will make me better in diversified areas like sports, portraits, events, festivals and history. Once a photograph is taken, my personal practice is to evaluate it and ask others for a healthy criticism. The most important aspect of photojournalism is originality. Even an old subject can be given a fresh look with one’s own originality. Making a good attractive portfolio is a key for a successful career in photojournalism. Participating in different photography contests can also be helpful in evaluating oneself and judging others’ work.
