The story “A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings: A Tale For Children” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a fascinating exemplification of the society’s real bad nature. In fact, it is all more about people’s cruelty and narrow-mindedness which Marquez shows off by means of the magic realism. A figure of angel is not something to make people think over their deeds or the reason for such a mysterious arrival on earth. Instead, the main characters, Pelayo and Elisinda, decide to make business out of the angel blocked in the chicken coop. Their intentions were of greedy nature:
In the midst of that shipwreck disorder that made the earth tremble, Pelayo and Elisenda were happy with fatigue, for in less than a week they had crammed their rooms with money and the line of pilgrims waiting their turn to enter still reached beyond the horizon (Marquez, 2010, para. 7).
This is what makes the mankind so deep in decay. Greed and narrow-mindedness as well as a lack of humane are illustrated to be a reason for keeping the angel locked in the coop. This story is significant for its unbiased depiction of people’s characters united in more negative attitudes toward precious things. Marquez could have managed to show it philosophically and in a simple setting, so as even children could bear the notion of where the truth of people’s nature is. The episode of people’s dull perseverance to get an idea of heavenly prescriptions by writing to “the Supreme Pontiff in order to get the final verdict” makes everyone grin at its best or even lose one’s temper (Marquez, 2010, para. 5).
Magic realism prescribed to the overall genre of the story is successfully chosen to express a so-called normality of people (living in a small town with allegedly strong traditions and beliefs) abnormally. It is especially illuminated in the episode of the pastor’s attempts to speak Latin with the angel, as a particular way to prove his genuine heavenly nature (Marquez, 2010). It lays an additional emphasis on the appropriateness of the main idea in the story to all generations of every age group.
