Introduction

Pollution is one of the major challenges that the world is currently faced with especially with the high rate of growth in industries. Many conventions have been organized with an aim of coming up with a mechanism of controlling the levels of pollution in the world. There are a number of factors that causes pollution in the world and the major one is emission of pollutants into the atmosphere from industries. In order to address the problem of pollution in the world which is a major threat to the survival of humanity in the next few decades, there is a need to come up with ways of controlling the levels of emissions released to the atmosphere.

Country of Interest

United Arab Emirate has not been left out in the efforts of addressing the problem of pollution. UAE has been one of the largest oil producers in the world that experience high levels of air pollutions which are a threat to the survival of citizens. The country has been facing major challenges as a result of changes in the climate due to pollution from oil production.  Pollution has caused major changes in the climate in the region whereby the level of warmth in the region is on the rise, therefore, threatening the survival of many inhabitants in the region. The government of the United Arab Emirate has not been left behind in addressing this problem. The government has developed legal framework that is intended to ensure that levels of pollutions from industries are within manageable levels.

The subject of pollution control in United Arab Emirate is of major interest to the citizens of this country as it has a direct impact on their lives. If levels of environmental pollution are controlled, then citizens of this country will not be suffering from diseases that are related to environmental pollution such as cancer. They will also enjoy clean air to breathe as well as clean environment to live in with manageable levels of noise pollution. Therefore, managing to control various forms of pollution with United Arab Emirates will be a major achievement of the government toward the direction of a sustainable clean environment for both current and future generations.

The major causes of pollution in United Arab Emirate are business entities. The businesses which are engaged in production activities tend to emit high levels of emissions which cause various forms of pollution. In order to address these causes, the government has passed environmental laws including environmental management policies that are aimed at ensuring that pollution is within manageable limits. Unless these polices are implemented the levels of emission will be on the rise. In order to address this use, the government of this country has set up an environment management body that is mandated to oversee implementation of various environmental management policies (Turner, 1994).

Operational Policies of Controlling Pollution in UAE

There are a number of operational polices that have been developed in UAE with an aim of controlling pollution in this country. The policies have had a positive impact globally as they have been useful in controlling levels of pollution in the world. One of the major, innovations in the world of business that have been developed  with an aim of controlling pollution is development of insurance products that are used to cover the various financial uncertainties that are a result of an organization exposed to environment liability. Different organizations have unique environmental profile of risk and people have developed risk management likewise insurance products that have been useful in managing levels of pollution in UAE.

One of the operational policies that have been developed in controlling the impact of pollution to business organizations is pollution liability insurance product.  This policy naturally is used in protecting the insured organization against unexpected losses that arises from occurrence of unknown form of pollution. They include cover of bodily harms, cleanup costs and third-party damage that occurs to the affected property. Policies can be formulated to cover various operational effluence risks which arise from unexpected leakages, discharges or spillages more than those historical risks that are associated with liabilities from preexisting contamination. This cover has been used to fill the gap that has been left from exclusion of general liability insurance policies. There is also the possibility of combining both the historical as well as operational pollution covers into a single insurance policy. The policies are usually extended with an aim of covering transportation exposure, contingent risks, and off-site disposal locations for wastes.

The second operational policy that has impacted globally positively is the development of contractor pollution liability insurance policy. This policy is usually designed to provide insurance protection to an organization that is facing certain types of environmental risks as result of engagement in business operations such as a construction or environmental contractors. These operations in most cases tend to present conditions that result into pollution of the environment. Majority of the projects requires a pollution liability insurance cover. Therefore, contractors can take cover arranged on a portfolio or project to project basis.

Professional indemnity is another operational insurance cover that has been developed with an aim of reducing the impact of pollution on the society. The policy usually covers organizations that are engaged in provision of professional advice. This cover is used to protect the professional in question from the risks that are associated with a number of consequences arising from an act of negligence, omission or error. This policy has helped compensate individuals affected by an environmental pollution as a result of negligence on the part of professional who was providing professional advice on the project that caused the pollution that resulted into damages on third parties.

Another operational insurance policy that covers damages resulting from pollution is the remediation cost cap policy. The policy is concerned with paying for unexpected remediation costs of the project that do exceed the original estimates of the project. Cost overruns can be as a result of discovery of new forms of contaminations, changes in regulation requirements and underestimations of project costs.

The above operational policies have brought change in the way pollution is handled in UAE. The affected parties of a given pollution occurrence such as spillage of oil can now be compensated for damages they suffer as a result of occurrence of the accident that result into the spillage. Various organizations are now able to invest in highly pollutant risk areas as there are covers that can help to pay for pollution damages resulting from those projects. Therefore, there has been increase in levels of employment opportunities in the world as a result of organizations investing in high risky projects but with high returns (Turner, 1994).

Conclusion

Pollution being a major challenge in UAE steps has been taken to ensure that levels of emissions are reduced. The government as well as business organization has been in the forefront in developing sustainable environmental management policies that will help to decrease levels of emissions in the country. The country has been using insurance covers as operational policies aimed at reducing the impact of pollution on the part of the society and the organization itself. In conclusion, UAE has made tremendous steps in controlling pollution, especially, air pollution which is resulting from oil production through use of technology plus insurance policies.
